What is aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils extracted from aromatic plants to enhance psychological and physical well-being.

What are essential oils?

Essential oils constitute the odorous principles of a plant.Essential oils are highly concentrated volatile liquids extracted from aromatic plants where they are part of the defense system of the plants

How are essential oils extracted from plants?

Essential oils can be obtained using many methods of extraction –but the most common is steam distillation: steam from boiling water is used to extract the essential oils from the plant material. Then, the steam is cooled and condensed into a liquid from which the essential oil is skimmed off as it floats on top of the water.

Are essential oils the same as perfume?

Essential oils should not be confused with perfumes or other fragrance oils. Essential oils are natural whereas fragrance oils are chemically produced

Can essential oils be applied directly to my skin?

In their pure form, essential oils are highly concentrated and can irritate your skin. It is recommended to dilute them in a carrier oil which decreases the possibility of skin irritation especially when applying them to a large skin surface

What is a Carrier oil?

A carrier oil is a natural cold pressed vegetable oil used to dilute essential oils before their application to the skin.
The following are some common carrier oils: Sweet Almond Oil, Fractionated Coconut oil, Argan oil, Jojoba oil…
Mineral oils cannot be used as carrier oils because they prevent the skin from breathing and they have no skin care effect.

What are the main characteristics of essential oils?

Essential oils are highly concentrated liquids which contain hundreds of active chemical constituents.
Essential oils are non-greasy, highly volatile and insoluble in water.They are soluble in oil or alcohol.
Essential oils can penetrate the skin and go into the bloodstream.

Can I use essential oils during pregnancy?

Pregnant women should take extra care when using essential oils.
Safe essential oils to use during pregnancy but in mild dilution (about 1%):
Geranium,Mandarin/Tangerine,Lavender,Roman Chamomile and Rose

How should I store my essential oils?

Essential oils are best kept in dark glass bottles and they should be stored in a cool place, preferably out of the direct sunlight.
Always keep essential oil bottles away from the reach of children.

Can essential oils be dangerous?

Essential oils are highly concentrated substances.They should be used as directed.In case of misuse they can produce toxic effects.
When used properly, essential oils are extremely beneficial without negative side effects.
